OVERVIEW

Get dressed is a fashion app that gives users outfit recommendations in a fast and fun way.

PROBLEM

There seemed to be a need for easily accessible style advice for the general public. Fashion coordination is now increasingly necessary for ones social and professional success. Social media has raised the amount of comparative models. The challenge was to find a way to assist people with their outfit coordination, while allowing them to retain their feeling of independence in decision making.

“Everyone needs to participate in fashion every day whether they like it or not, we all have to get dressed” - Jen, 35

GOAL

Identify what people struggle with when styling themselves. Design a mobile app that helps them improve the process.

USER RESEARCH PLAN

Competitive analysis was done using the Internet as a resource to identify competing products in this market. A survey was used to reach a larger audience to gather some quantitative data. A group of four friends and family members were chosen to interview, and find out more about their daily fashion needs.

The project was outlined during the interview process. The interviewees were given a list of questions, followed by a free form conversation. The interviews were voice recorded and notes were taken.

FINDINGS

75% of people agreed fashion is important. The interviewees considered it a way to express oneself and be an individual.

“Fashion can be used as a gateway into different worlds whether that is for business or pleasure and it can be a way to find your tribe” - Dan, 33.

Interviewees liked fashion for fun, but did not have time to make it a priority. They were more likely to spend time and money on new clothing for events in their lives. The events that stood out revolved around weddings, jobs, and dates.

“Dress for the job you want to have” - Kelly, 35.

Family members or a trusted friend were considered the best when it came to fashion advice or a second opinion.

"I don't trust many of the salespeople in stores, my Mom was a big help with choosing my last important outfit for a wedding. I just sent her photos via my phone." - Lilly, 25

All interviewees required equal help picking out clothes, creating outfits and knowing where to shop.

PERSONA DEVELOPMENT

Through my interviews and research, four personas were created to showcase target audiences for the app. These personas were used as reference points throughout the development process.

TESTING INSIGHTS

  • Upon testing the prototype users thought the selection felt too automatic. I decided to integrate the concept of AI based learning where the app will adapt to the users preferences based on their yes and no swipings.

  • Users voiced the need for price tags therefore I added those as well as a main budget filter.

  • Users responded better to the choice of a defined occasion rather than specific articles of clothing.

“Weddings are a time to shine so I am willing to spend a bit more time and money on outfits for that occasion” - Kim, 55.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

I created different iterations of the apps palette and iconography. Users responded best to a more muted and sleek branding, evoking a trusted fashion design brand or publication.

MID-FI PROTOTYPE

Demo 1

The User would like to find an outfit for an upcoming wedding. She chooses her date, location and budget requirements for the outfit. She then requests to see a mix of outfits from both her personal closet and shopping. She chooses which recommended outfits she likes and is then given a final advised outfit. She decides to send this outfit image via text to a friend for advice.

Demo 2

The User would like to get recommendations for a new work event outfit. Again he selects date, location, budget and then the go shopping option. He chooses the outfits he likes and then receives the final app recommendation. He decides to buy this chosen outfit.
